Dragon Sculpture - 2000
![]() |
I was approached by an architect to design a set of wine cellar gates. It was the first time someone came to me looking for something functional.
I have a background in machine shop work from a family business that stretches back three generations, so functional is, while I wouldn’t say easy, it’s understandable.
After the gate concept was decided, I asked the customer if they wanted to see any reference photos of my work. As soon as they found out I had been doing sculpture, the woman of the house tells me, “We must have a dragon!” While working on this piece in my studio people began streaming in to see. This piece took six months to do and during that time, I got orders for four more. I ended up doing exclusively dragons for three years. There are now 13 dragons in Steel and Bronze throughout New England.
Dragons have so much movement and expression that I will always find new ways to design them.
